"A Self-Critical Puzzle," by Ross Trudeau

Constructor's Comments

This puzzle was a lot of fun to make.  I imagine it will be more fun to solve for folks who have been crosswording for a while and can nod and laugh along with a puzzle that pokes fun at puzzles.  I also felt okay dropping in a bunch of cheater squares around the periphery of the grid, because I wanted to produce a pretty smooth solving experience . . . including a bunch of CROSSWORDESE or PARTIAL answers would have been a bit too meta. . . .

  1. Missing accent at 35-Across.

Misspelled entry at 16-Across (tsk-tsk!)! The 1970 Simon & Garfunkel song is "Cecilia," not "Cecelia".

    1. Good catch! My brain must've inverted the I and E of 4-Down NIECE. Still working on getting the accent issue fixed, so bear with me for now.

    2. I think you're telling me not to bother reporting any more missing diacritics, so I won't report them. I had thought that you'd like to have an ongoing list of past clues to repair at some point.

    3. Thanks for thinking of this! You're welcome to keep reporting them—I just can't fix them with the current setup!

  2. I enjoyed the puzzle, Ross and David, but while you're being self-critical, please have a word with yourselves about BURQA. It's not a veil - that would be hijab. It's an outer garment, that covers the whole head and body, with only a mesh area through which to see and breathe.

    1. Thanks, Paul! Numerous credible sources consider a burqa a veil, but I see your point, so I'll be sure the entry gets clued more precisely for future puzzles.
